Anil Kumble, the former Test Captain for Indian cricket team, and one of the most successful bowlers in Indian Cricket history has been named as the head coach for Indian Men’s Cricket Team.
The term for Anil Kumble as the head coach for team India is One-Year and begins with India’s tour of West Indies starting in July 2016.
Among the 57 applicants, only 10 were called for final interview and it is Kumble who got the final nod. The announcement was made today (23-06-2016) at Dharmasala in a press conference by BCCI President Mr.Anurag thakur and Ajay Shirke (Secretary).
Initially, there was a speculation around that there will be stiff competition between Ravi Shastri, Sandeep Patil, Praveen Amre, Venkatesh Prasad alongside Anil. But it is Kumble who has crossed the line successfully for this head coach race.
The panel comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sanjay Jagdale (Co-ordinator) carried out the interview proceedings a few days back. Although Anil Kumble is not having any experience previously with any team, his mentor skills with Banglore and Mumbai IPL teams has fetched him the weight.
Brief about Anil Kumble:
Anil Kumble is India’s most fighting sportsman and greatest match-winning bowler who bagged 619 wickets in Tests and 337 in ODI’s. He is the highest wicket-taker for India as of today, third in International list (Tests). He is also the highest wicket taker in One-Day Internationals (ODI’s) for India.

- His match winning 10 wicket haul against Pakistan was one of the best performances ever for him.
- Kumble is only the second bowler to achieve that feat after England’s Jim Laker who took 10/53 against Australia in 1956.
- His spell of 6/12 in the Hero Cup final against West Indies at Kolkata on November 27th, 1993 (ODI).
- He has dismissed 156 batsmen LBW which is a world record.
- Kumble dismissed 77 players for a duck which is the most by an Indian bowler.

After 15 years, technically Anil Kumble is the first ‘Indian” coach the BCCI has appointed after 15 years.
Kapil Dev, the great was the last Indian coach prior to Anil Kumble who was an Indian Coach for team India and was resigned in September 2000.
Among the 57 candidates applied for the position of head coach, foreigners like Tom Moody, Stuart Law, Andy Moles has tried their luck without success.
Anil Kumble’s one year term starts with the India’s four-Test tour of West Indies in July-August. He has got 13 tests, eight One-Day Internationals, and three Twenty20’s to prove his metal.
